August 19

Justin Rosolino opens for Cindy Lou Harrington at the beach at Pine Lake, 8:00pm Saturday, August 19.

The next Fiddler's Green concert is scheduled for Saturday, August 19th. If you were not one of the 150 plus folks who enjoyed the spectacular concert at the Pine Lake Beach in July, then you aren't aware of the fact that our audience made it quite clear that they would like us to repeat the effort in August. So we will. This month our beach concert will feature local performing songwriter Justin Rosolino opening for Cindy Lou Harrington and her band Showdown. Directions are at the end of this section.

The music will start at 8:00, continuing until about 10:30. Coffee, tea, soft drinks and light snacks/desserts will be available for purchase; you are welcome to bring your own food if you want a meal. Those wishing to drink alcoholic beverages may bring their own. The requested donation will be $8 general admission ($7 for AAFFM members). Children under 12 are welcome without charge.

This will be an outdoor concert held on the beach at Pine Lake. Feel free to bring a picnic dinner, lawn chairs or chaise lounge chairs, or even beach blankets, swimwear, floats or inner tubes, etc. if you feel like getting wet.

DIRECTIONS: From I-285 on the east side of Atlanta, exit Memorial Drive and head east (outside the perimeter) for 0.6 miles to the third traffic light, where you turn right on Rockbridge Road. Continue straight on Rockbridge for 1.5 miles and turn left on Spring Drive (by the church just past Algood Road). In one block Spring becomes one way against you, so turn right on Poplar, go one block and turn left on Pine. You'll come to the lake in about four blocks or so. Turn right to find a place to park.

Opening the Show -- Justin Rosolino

Justin Rosolino This relative newcomer to the local acoustic scene surprised us with his songwriting and performance skills when he shared a stage with veteran performers Pierce Pettis and Bill Mallonee in a writers night at the Attic a while back. We decided we wanted to share him with our Fiddler's fans, and he has been gracious enough to come open for Showdown.

His performance will feature crisp, clean guitar work, a great strong voice, unique and interesting lyrics, an evident respect for all the music that has preceded him, and a pleasant stage personality.

His press has the typical supportive quotes from industry folks, but we can't resist this one: "I don't know... I guess I just thought that this whole music thing would just blow over - you know, like a phase?" -- Justin's Mom

Featured Act -- Cindy Lou Harrington and Showdown

Cindy Lou Harrington Frankly, this performance will be a little more on the country side than we typically present. However, Cindy Lou Harrington's excellent songwriting has always been pretty folk-flavored, with lyrics that can be incredibly moving. She's one of the rapidly rising local music sensations (she opened for Kathy Matthea at the Fox last year). This is a voice you won't soon forget, and with her band you'll get a great big show echoing across the lake.

Recent music awards include five original songs being named "Best of Country" by the Georgia Music Industry Association, the national CD manufacturer Disk Makers consider her the best talent in the Southeast and included her on a compilation album called Southeast Heavy Hitters, and the Atlanta Society of Entertainers named Harrington "Recording Artist of the Year."

One of the reasons Cindy Lou's songs seem to reach people so readily is that she draws on her own life, both her education and her experiences as a teacher for students with multiple physical and intellectual disabilities, for inspiration. "Let Me Win," a song she wrote for one of her students, was performed at the 1996 Paralympic Torch Ceremonies, and has now been adopted as the official Special Olympics Theme Song for Georgia. Her song "The First Bright Star" was featured at the lighting of Rich's Great Tree in 1998.

It's impossible to explain how this special ability to connect, to care and to share, carries over into Harrington's music creation and performance. You just have to come experience it yourself.

Her efforts in combining her music and teaching talents are evident by the benefits she does for such causes as United Cerebral Palsy, Cystic Fibrosis, the World Children's Center and Prevent Blindness. These efforts have not gone unnoticed; in June she was awarded the Teacher of the Year Award from the Pilot Club of Atlanta, the first special education teacher to receive the award. A few months before that, Harrington received one of Georgia's top honors, the Big Heart Award presented by Georgia Distirct North Civitan. Previous recipients include Sam Nunn, Zell Miller, Max Cleland, Bobby Dodd, Vince Dooley, Phil Niekro and Dale Murphy.

This Fiddler's performance will be a unique opportunity to hear Harrington; in addition to the Fox Theatre show, she has performed at Six Flags, the Omni, Nikolai's Roof, Stone Mountain Park and Turner Field.

She will be joined by her band Showdown, which consists of Michael Wheeler on harmony vocals and drums, Peter Vogl on lead guitar, Emily Locke on harmony vocals, Tom Wolf on harmony vocals, guitar and harmonica, Craig Rafuse on guitar, and either Mike Burke or Jerry Peek on bass.

Come join us on the 19th!
